This is the fourth of these pens I’ve owned over the years. One was chewed up by my dog about 7 yrs ago and I ordered another which I lost, alas. When the chewed up one finally began to get so that the cap was loose and I was afraid it would get lost if I kept carrying it everywhere I bought another which was borrowed by a customs agent in Laredo and which I forgot to get back (borders make me concentrate on other things than borrowed pens) so I had to get another. Never carry other pens for at least 10 years and never have the desire for others. I write notes lying in my hammock with pen upside down or whatever. Useful, elegant in an understated way and just fine workmanship. The only thing is that the refills blob if you drop the pen on its point . . . but that happens with any pen I’ve ever used. I use the fine-point black refills rather than the medium that comes with the pen.

To me this pen exemplifies the minimalist and clean design of the iPod, it is widely considered one of the greatest examples of modern industrial design and has a permanent home in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art. I love this pen so much I end up telling everyone I know about it. Yes that sounds stupid but there are so many reasons why it is so great. It is more fine art than pen, more crafted than manufactured, more perfect device than office supply. For one it is flippin in-de-struct-a-ble, for another the ink will NEVER LEAK. There are just so many ways that this pen feels like a finely crafted instrument, no a weapon, yes It’s like holding a finely crafted hand gun. Like James Bond’s Walther PPK you can feel the weight of the pen in your hand, not just your fingers, yet the impression is not of a heavy writing instrument but of balanced and solidly constructed device. The black matte is the best finish because your fingers will not stick to it like they would to a shiny surface.
I was always breaking or loosing full sized plastic pens or even having them leak ink into my pockets. My brother had this Space pen and after using it once, I was hooked. I immediately bought myself one and haven’t looked back since. It’s the perfect size for a pocket pen. With the cap put on the back when writing it becomes a full sized pen so no worries about trying to write with a smaller one. There are no sharp edges (I have the version without the clip) so my pockets do not get snagged, nor does the other stuff that I carry with it all the time. And the best part – it’s durable! It can keep up with me and my active life. I’ve had it for two years now, used it every day and it still looks close to new. Also, it’s just *now* running out of ink, after two years worth of use. Best pen I ever bought! Time to go buy a refill.
You know, for a pen that is not very glamorous, for a pen that looks like it belonged, at some point in time, in Batman’s function-over-form-hands, it is remarkably attractive. The design is very sound, it has what appears to be a locking mechanism to keep the pen tip in place so no one loses their pen accidentally (17 dollars may not be a lot of money to those of us stocking up for the apocalypse, but it is to me.) It writes upside down, I have yet to find a material that can be written upon underwater, perhaps wood will do…but yeah, it is, like many a reviewer has said, not exactly a fine writing tool, but it is a darn good one in terms of toughness, waterproofing, sweatproofing, drop-proofing, and more. I doubt someone could do damage to this pen indirectly unless some unavoidable catastrophe struck, like your pen got ran over by a car, or it got shattered by a bullet, or something like that. Its pretty good stuff. Don’t hammer it through bricks or plywood, don’t step on it, basically, don’t do anything unusual to it, and it will last for as long as steel, tungsten carbide, and brass last, which will be significantly longer than the buyers life, obviously.
My first fisher bullet space pen was over 10 years ago. I have used one since then. Must have misplaced my last one. that required ordering a new one. They just do the job very effectively and are so convenient to carry.
